The Romans in Évora I

In all the histories of Portugal and the portuguese heritage inventories, this Roman building stands as a symbol of the territory antiquity and the Romanization of this area. Currently the Temple is situated in the centre of a large square, called Marques de Marialva, and assumes a high position in relation to the city. The pax romana, establish by Augustus upon the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula and other Roman provinces, inaugurated a period of peace wich was, wisely, extensively exploited as political advantadge. The building of religious temples to worship the emperor and the election of a certain number of personal qualities became acclaimed throughout the Empire. Ebora Liberalitas Julia was a city founded by Julius Caeser or Augustus and it was then assinigned the rank of municipium. The term Ebora should be of Celtic origin, which indicates the existence of a settlement prior to the Roman City.
